Meta unveiled a prototype of its new augmented reality (AR) glasses, named “Orion,” during its Meta Connect event, positioning them as a “time machine” to the future.

Key Takeaways

  • Meta unveiled a new AR glasses prototype named Orion at Meta Connect.
  • Meta AI’s new update is ready to mimic celebrity voices.
  • The world’s first AR glasses are expected to ship in 2027.

Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook Meta, unveiled the world’s first prototype of augmented reality spectacles, known as Orion, on Wednesday at the Meta Connect event. These glasses represent a huge step forward in augmented reality technology, intending to someday challenge the smartphone as the next dominant computer platform.

He stepped onto the stage with new innovation, making the world surprise with his words:

The most advanced technology at this moment that the world has never seen before. They aren’t just glasses but holograms superimposed on a tangible world.

His hands were making a movement to pull a metal case in which chunky black glasses were resting; it seemed that his actions were justifying his statement.

It rolled the eyes of consumers toward it, but they are still in the development process and expected to take a few more years before reaching the consumer market. The vision is clear: provide an immersive platform for communication and engagement. Orion’s possible applications span from gaming to real-time translation, to build strong ties between individuals in both the physical and digital world.

He brings the fantasy to the world with his statement:

“I think this is the best way to view Orion right now as a time machine. It’s going to be pretty exciting, as they are a sneak peek that I believe will be an exciting future.”

Additionally, Meta introduced additional AI chatbot features with a brand-new mixed-reality headset. Meta AI has received an audio upgrade. Ready to respond to voice instructions and allows users to customize the assistant’s voice to mimic that of celebrities

“I believe that voice interaction with AI will be far more intuitive than text-based communication,” ~Zuckerberg.

The glasses are lightweight at approximately 100 grams, much lighter than current virtual reality headsets like Meta Quest or Apple’s Vision Pro. Orion’s interface will be controlled using subtle hand gestures and voice commands while eye-tracking technology enhances the interactive experience. The device’s integration with wireless wristbands also allows users to trigger actions like messaging with simple finger taps.

Zuckerberg showcased a video presenting the way users reply to the device. The clip showed a few text messages and images that were visible via glasses. Jensen, the CEO of Nvidia (NVDA.O), acted as a prominent tester.

In a conversation with a mixed martial arts fighter from Mexico, Brandon Moreno, Zuckerberg demonstrates the language tool. The glasses translated English into Spanish and vice versa while discussing. They also intend to come up with a video feature with real-time translation.

Before the event, sources revealed that Meta intends to release its first pair of AR glasses for customers in 2027, after which tech developments should reduce manufacturing costs.
