TikTok parent, ByteDance, reportedly is creating a new AI model trained by Huawei chips.

Key Takeaways

  • China firm ByteDance reportedly is creating a new AI model trained by Huawei chips.
  • This move follows US export restrictions in 2022, limiting access to AI chips made by Nvidia
  • ByteDance has denied these claims and said that no new model is being developed.

Insiders reported that TikTok’s parent firm, ByteDance, is working on a new AI model that will use Huawei’s Ascend 910B CPUs. This move follows US export restrictions in 2022 that limit China’s access to powerful AI chips made by Nvidia. Not just ByteDance but also other Chinese tech companies took a bold step and resorted to domestic vendors such as Huawei to avoid these restrictions.

Anonymous sources also declared that,

It is expected that the next step of ByteDance in the AI competition will be to train a large-language AI model using Huawei’s Ascend 910B chip.

We also got the news that one insider stated that,

ByteDance is developing a new AI model but could not specify whether it will include Huawei chips.

The Ascend 910B chips will be primarily used to train the new artificial intelligence model. The three people and a separate source indicated that pre-trained AI models are used to make projections.

However, ByteDance faces challenges in acquiring enough chips to meet its needs. Despite ordering 100,000 chips from Huawei, the company has only received about 30,000, slowing down the AI model’s development. These chips are expected to be less powerful than Nvidia’s GPUs, which ByteDance used previously for more computationally intensive tasks.

AI models require massive amounts of data to be trained, which calls for the adoption of extremely high-performance technologies like the flagship graphics processing units from Nvidia.

According to one of the sources,

The new model’s computational parameters will indicate its competence and complexity, making it less potent than ByteDance’s current AI model, Doubao.

While ByteDance has denied these claims, ByteDance spokesman Michael Hughes stated,

“The entire premise here is wrong. No new model is being developed.”

However, multiple insiders suggest that the company is moving forward with these plans. ByteDance is also a major purchaser of Nvidia’s AI chips through Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, highlighting the company’s diverse chip supply strategy despite trade restrictions.

New AI models and tools are launching each year with new features, making the world full of innovation, but privacy nightmares like Microsoft AI Screenshot Tool are giving rise to debate.
